Today I want to take a minute to talk about my two favorite things: coffee and Silver Fern probiotics.
The other day someone asked me if I was team matcha or team coffee, and I just want to know what kind of person creates such a polarizing question.
I could never choose a team, nor do I want to!
Depending on the day, I either begin it with a superfood latte or a matcha latte, but one thing stays constant: my probiotics.
My go-to drink every single morning that fuels me and pushes me through the whole day (literally pushes me through people).
- 1 cup of coffee (or 2 shots of espresso)
- 1/3 cup almond milk
- 2 tsp honey
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tbsp ghee
- 1 scoop vital proteins collagen peptides
- 1 tsp yin powder from sunpotion (can also substitute this for any adaptogens of choice)
Brew 1 cup of coffee, or make 2 espresso shots.
Add coffee of choice + almond milk, honey, cinnamon, ghee, collagen, and adaptogens to a blender. Blend on medium for 10 seconds.
Pour into cup of choice & enjoy!
Probiotics: A Fad, or A Lifelong Staple?
You’ve probably seen them all over Instagram, I mean, heck, you’ve definitely seen them all over my Instagram: probiotics.
In short, and easy to understand terms, probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that keep our digestive tract happy and healthy. Probiotic strands are found in supplements like silver fern probiotics, but they can also be found in many foods like yogurt.
Did you know that over 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract? There is a reason that having a strong gut is essential to having a strong immune system and vice versa.
As someone who struggled with an unhealthy gut for years, I can say that taking probiotics, along with a good whole foods based diet, has helped me heal my gut in incredible ways.
How do you know if you need to work on healing your gut?
Most of the time this isn’t actually the question that one is asking. If you have gut health issues you know because it impacts so much of your being. If you are wondering if your gut health needs some work, these could be some of your symptoms: bloating after eating, being unable to digest your food, or even things like IBS or Colitis.
Another symptom of an unhealthy gut biome is a change in mood, anxiety, and/or depression. People don’t always correlate mental health with gut health, but believe it or not, your gut health has a large impact on your mental health. In fact, 95% of your bodies Serotonin, aka the happy neurotransmitter, originates from the gastrointestinal tract. If your gut health is off, this will impact the production of this chemical, and consequently impact your mental health.
Another warning sign of having something off in your gut biome is having intense sugar and hunger cravings. Typically, when our gut has an overwhelming amount of bad bacteria, our gut will signal to our brain to eat more sugar. This is where those powerful and unwanted sugar cravings kick in.
Meanwhile, if your gut is filled with bad bacteria, it will fail to absorb nutrients when you eat them, thrusting you into a constant state of hunger.
When you take a probiotic supplement it will help replace the bad bacteria in your stomach, with good bacteria, which will cease the unwanted sugar cravings, put your appetite back at a normal rate, and watch closely as your mood balances back out. It’s crazy what just two little pills can do to your overall lifestyle.
I remember thinking that I would never be able to eat food without being nervous ever again. Or that I would have to live off of rice cakes and peanut butter for the rest of my life. I remember thinking that fighting an intense desire for sugar was normal.
None of those things are normal, nor should you have to deal with them constantly!
Which probiotics brand do I trust the most?
Whenever I share a photo of my probiotics or talk about how they have helped my gut health people ask which ones I rely on.
I’ve been taking Silver Fern Probiotics off-and-on for three years now. When I first starting taking probiotics I would just pick some random brand up at CVS. Luckily, after only a few months, a friend of mine told me to do research on the brand that I was using, and I quickly realized that it wasn’t really doing much to help my body.
After that, I did a considerable amount of research and learned about how a lot of probiotics on the market end up not being alive by the time they reach the intestinal tract. This consequently takes away most of the value.
I didn’t discover the Silver Fern Brand on purpose. One afternoon I stumbled upon their Instagram or Facebook page by accident, while on the discover page.
I quickly did some research and realized there was something special about this brand. After a few months, I started taking Silver Fern’s probiotics. At the same time, I started eating probiotic-rich foods as well, and watched as my gut slowly healed.
Where is your gut health at?
Maybe you’re at a place where you think you will never be able to eat anxiety-free ever again or maybe you think it’s normal to crave sugar all the time and experience intense mood swings.
I am writing this blog post to tell you: this is not a sustainable way of life. Eating rice cakes or cereal for every meal is not sustainable. Feeling terrible every time you eat, is not sustainable.
I listened to that lie for the longest time. When I finally took matters into my own hands, I realized life was going to get better: I just had to work at it.
P.S. If you are more of a coffee drinker, check out my go-to superfood latte here.
