Temperatures are going up (slowly but surely), flowers are starting to bloom, and my summertime lattes are in full swing.
When I think of an ideal summer day, I picture myself on my back porch, lounging on my couch with an iced latte in hand and my laptop on my legs. It’s an ideal work environment and one I miss all winter.
I haven’t always had a healthy relationship with coffee. Three years ago I got really sick — the I could barely get out of bed kind of sick. My nerves were shot, my brain was moving at the speed of a turtle, and my stomach couldn’t digest anything.
I was a mess.
I had to cut everything out of my diet and start from scratch to heal my gut — including my most favorite and abused beverage, coffee.
Right away I went cold turkey for six months, then only drank it a few times the following six. It was hard but it was worth it because it helped me regain a healthy gut biome. I started drinking coffee again, slowly adding it back into my diet.
Except for this time, it wasn’t to try to get my body to wake up, or my brain to snap out of its fog, but because I simply enjoyed the taste.
Why do I use superfood coffee?
For the past month, I have been experimenting with new coffee. I have narrowed down my two favorites to energizing superfood coffee and cardio care coffee. The reason I like these alternative coffees is that they include superfoods that I wouldn’t otherwise get.
Energizing superfood coffee has maca, guarana, cordyceps mushrooms, and Schisandra. The cardio-care has cacao, cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger.
Most mornings I make my coffee shortly after waking up. The energizing coffee is perfect to have first thing because of the superfoods it has inside of it. If I save my coffee for my pre-workout, then I use the cardio care coffee.
Benefits of Ashwagandha:
Ashwagandha is an herb with powerful healing properties. It’s an adaptogen that helps support your bodies response to stress. It’s a good alternative to some stress medications because instead of forcing your body to create specific hormones, it helps your body naturally adapt to where it needs to be.
The extra special part of ashwagandha is that it can help lower cortisol levels as well as balance thyroid hormones over a period of time.
Personally, as someone who is extremely type-A and prone to stacking blocks of stress up inside of me, ashwagandha has helped my body to naturally facilitate the stress that often builds inside of me.
Up until a little bit of time ago, I took ashwagandha in pill form, not knowing the benefits of taking it as the root powder. One of the things I try to emphasize is the importance in buying ashwagandha made just from the root. Many products on the market consist of both the root and leaves, diluting the purpose of the supplement.
Benefits of Red Reishi:
The reishi mushroom also is known as, “king of mushrooms,” is known for it’s healing properties.
Reishi mushrooms are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and their ability to boost the human immune system. Red Reishi, in particular, is known as the “mushroom of immortality” because it contains myconutrients, polysaccharides, and amino acids.
I started implementing reishi into my diet around the same time that I implemented ashwagandha and a few other important adaptogens. I was at a point in time where the mono virus had completely destroyed my immune system, and my body was in dire need of saving. The traditional medication I was put on ended up doing more damage to my immune system which ultimately led me to the world of mushrooms.
Both ashwagandha and reishi are adaptogens that I have kept consistently in my diet since then, because of the support they deliver to my immune system day after day.
I get my ingredients for my pre-workout smoothies, along with a few of my other superfood supplements, like spirulina, from BareOrganics. Not only are their supplements great, but they use 100% recyclable, BPA-free and reusable containers — aka they know what’s up!
